  • Developer | Java


    We’re building an innovative cloud service to coordinate energy stored in hundreds of thousands of devices. It will need to be both scalable and resilient while allowing us to run a novel and constantly evolving suite of algorithms. You’ll be part of a small agile team involved with hands-on system design, task analysis, implementation and testing. We have an immediate need for a number of Developers.

    Requirements:
    - 3+ years experience in Java development and testing frameworks (Java, Java Spring, Junit & Mockito)
    - A drive to get things done in a collaborative, agile development environment
    - Familiarity with container technologies (Docker, Chef, Kubernetes, Opsworksetc)
    - Experience developing, securing or operating cloud scale applications or infrastructure desirable

  • Senior Developer | Java


    We’re building an innovative cloud service to coordinate energy stored in hundreds of thousands of devices. It will need to be both scalable and resilient while allowing us to run a novel and constantly evolving suite of algorithms. You’ll be part of a small agile team involved with hands-on system design, task analysis, implementation and testing.

    We have an immediate need for several experienced Senior & Lead developers with strong Java backgrounds. We are also interested in applicants who can bring additional skills in the areas of DevOps and Java/system testing. Being an early stage start-up, this is a great opportunity for you to use your skills to help shape and influence our team.

    Requirements:
    - 5+ years of industry experience in software development & design
    - Proven experience in Java development and testing frameworks (Java, Java Spring, Junit & Mockito)

  • Analyst


    We’re looking for an analyst to join the team. You will report to and be working directly with the Chief Financial Officer/Chief Commercial Officer on critical financial and physical modeling. Your work will have a direct impact on the funding, partnering and revenue strategies of the company.

    You need to have a good understanding of the energy business and approximately 1+ years experience in an analyst type role that requires modeling.

    This role will be based in London or Manchester. Salary dependent on experience + pension.

  • Information Security Analyst


    Our cloud platform uses advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence to create our Virtual Energy Store™ by coordinating the energy stored in hundreds of thousands of devices owned by businesses and households across the UK. Developing this platform, with a focus on security, scalability and resilience while allowing us to run a novel and constantly evolving suite of algorithms, is core to Upside.

    At the heart of our strategy is a stack of cloud-native applications built on Java Spring, AWS, Docker, Prometheus, Angular, and Kubernetes complemented by modelling and algorithm development environments in Python, R and Octave. We see cyber security as part of our strategy and the ability to identify the threats, vulnerabilities and risks the organisation faces, and to forecast the impact and likelihood of such risks materialising is key to that.     Responsibilities:
    - 5+ years of industry experience in information and cyber security
    - Proven experience of implementing appropriate security concepts across the software development lifecycle

    - Proven experience in developing and managing account relationships with R&D partners

Ideally, you will have excellent project, programme and stakeholder management skills, with a strong track record of setting up and delivering complex projects in a collaborative R&D environment.

    Requirements

    - Proven track record of delivering complex, multi-stakeholder projects
    - Excellent relationship management skills
    - Strong, rounded skills in all aspects of project management –status and financial tracking, risk management, planning and budgeting, communications, etc

  • R&D Programme Analyst

    - Develop detailed models of energy consuming/storing equipment such as batteries, hot water tanks, heating systems (e.g. in tools such as MatLab or Octave)
    - Develop detailed models of integrated systems containing multiple pieces of equipment, e.g. within a household or commercial site
    - Develop financial models of costs and revenue potential of operating such systems over time for delivery of a portfolio of grid balancing services
    - Develop models of portfolios of multiple such systems, and their operating characteristics and financial potential over time (e.g. in tools such as Python or Excel)
    - Develop simplified models based on the above, e.g. for use by relationship management staff to provide estimates to site owners (e.g. in tools such as Excel)
    - Support relationship management staff and portfolio optimisation / tendering staff to use these models to sell services to site owners, energy system customers, etc

  • Business Analyst


    Ideally, you have experience working as a business analyst in retail or wholesale electricity marketsand have an understanding of electrical transmission and distribution networks — but more than any specific experience, the most important criteria for success will be your talent, energy and passion to help build and shape the future within a collaborative, agile, community-based environment.

    Requirements
    - 3-5years of industry experience in the retail or wholesale electricity markets
    - Proven experience of eliciting business requirements via workshops, discussion, document analysis, requirements workshops, site visits etc.
    - Strong aptitude for critical analysis -ability to distinguish user requests from the underlying needs
    - Ability to collaborate closely with external and internal customers to analyse information needs and functional requirements and deliver the following artifacts as needed
    - Experience of writing high quality use cases, functional and non-functional requirements, business process diagrams and acceptance criteria
    - Ability to collaborate with developers and subject matter experts to establish the technical vision and analyse trade offs between usability and performance needs.
    - Familiarity with energy storage concepts an advantage

  • Data Scientist


    You’ll work on problems that require a mixture of analytical methods and engineering solutions, from classical statistical modelling to black-box machine learning, using or developing the best tool for the job. Ideally, you have experience in a data-driven company with a focus on empirical, pragmatic and rigorous approaches to difficult problems.

    Requirements
    1-2 years of industry experience in data science or a similar analytical field
    Proven experience with data processing tools, particularly python (e.g. scipy, numpy, pandas)
    Experience using validated quantitative methods to find answers to applied research questions
    Experience with “big data” tools desirable
    Knowledge of optimisation, machine learning, modelling and/or statistical analysis desirable
    Ability to communicate findings and methods to non-specialists
    A drive to get things done in a collaborative, agile development environment
    Familiarity with modern revision control and issue tracking workflows (e.g. git, kanban)
    Experience in the energy sector preferred, otherwise experience in the telco or industrial engineering sectors would be an advantage
